Ghost of Yotei PS5

Any references to Ghost of Tsushima and its protagonist Jin Sakai will be at a premium, it appears, in the PS5 follow-up Ghost of Yotei.

The sequel is set just under 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, so Jin will be long dead by the beginning of the revenge-focused events in Ghost of Yotei. Still, Jin could have distant family relatives alive three centuries later. However, Sucker Punch has seemingly ruled out this actually materialising into a plot point in the follow-up.

Speaking to Game Informer, creative director Nate Fox calls it a "spiritual sequel" and says you don't need to have played the first game to understand what's going on in Ghost of Yotei. "Atsu is considered an Onryō, an avenging spirit, by the people of Ezo because she keeps living through all of these attempts to get revenge, and she becomes a walking legend in the land that she explores. Her reputation precedes her. In this way, it's similar, but it's very much its own story."

Based on the recent State of Play showcase, Ghost of Tsushima fans have theorised that one way Ghost of Yotei could connect back to the first game is in the form of your wolf companion. Some reckon the wolf is the reincarnation of Jin Sakai, to which creative director Jason Connell responds: "I love our fans [laughs]. They’re so creative. I love it."

Ghost of Yotei will tell the story of Atsu, who is out to get revenge on the Yotei Six after they killed her family. This is a similar setup to Assassin's Creed Shadows, which released earlier this year in the same setting. There have been some concerns over the familiarity between the two stories, but Nate Fox said the revenge quest is just the start of the overall plot. It's "the start – absolutely not the whole thing – but it's a great start," he explained.
