Any references to Ghost of Tsushima and its protagonist Jin Sakai will be at a premium, it appears, in the PS5 follow-up Ghost of Yotei.
The sequel is set just under 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima, so Jin will be long dead by the beginning of the revenge-focused events in Ghost of Yotei. Still, Jin could have distant family relatives alive three centuries later. However, Sucker Punch has seemingly ruled out this actually materialising into a plot point in the follow-up.
Speaking to Game Informer, creative director Nate Fox calls it a "spiritual sequel" and says you don't need to have played the first game to understand what's going on in Ghost of Yotei. "Atsu is considered an Onryō, an avenging spirit, by the people of Ezo because she keeps living through all of these attempts to get revenge, and she becomes a walking legend in the land that she explores. Her reputation precedes her. In this way, it's similar, but it's very much its own story."
Based on the recent State of Play showcase, Ghost of Tsushima fans have theorised that one way Ghost of Yotei could connect back to the first game is in the form of your wolf companion. Some reckon the wolf is the reincarnation of Jin Sakai, to which creative director Jason Connell responds: "I love our fans [laughs]. They’re so creative. I love it."
Ghost of Yotei will tell the story of Atsu, who is out to get revenge on the Yotei Six after they killed her family. This is a similar setup to Assassin's Creed Shadows, which released earlier this year in the same setting. There have been some concerns over the familiarity between the two stories, but Nate Fox said the revenge quest is just the start of the overall plot. It's "the start – absolutely not the whole thing – but it's a great start," he explained.

That means he will be.
Time travel confirmed
Yeah, it’s 2025, people believe all kinds of wild stuff
Jin will be reincarnated in the form of paid DLC.
Isn't he supposedly the original ghost though ? The first game was about building your legend as the ghost , so saying there's no reference wouldn't even make sense story wise .
I expect it would be a smaller thing. Like one of the mythic tales from the first game where Atsu will learn a new move based on the legend of Jin
And that makes jin sakai one of the best protagonist ever.if you haven't play ghost of tsushima play it.word up son
Makes sense to me, make Ghost of Yotei it's own thing. Though I could see Atsu getting a Jin inspired outfit.
@Czar_Khastik Haha, that's literally what they did with Cole in inFamous Second Son.
He's definitely going to be a mythic tale.
@RBMango I was thinking that myself. Learn a cool move and learn a bit about the OG Ghost. All it needs to be
@SuperSilverback Getting the clan Sakai armor at the end of mythic tale would be sick.
@ztpayne7 honestly, that's all I'm hoping for. I'm also still waiting to see if Legends mode will be a thing.
@AK4tywill Lol, I didn't know that, nice. Well then we'll just have to see if history will repeat itself.
@AK4tywill @Czar_Khastik this isn’t exactly right. In Second Son, they had free dlc involving Cole but you didn’t actually get to play as him. It was called Paper Trail, and you play it as Delsin but learn more what happened after Cole’s light side ending.
@RBMango yes, that’s actually a great example of what could actually happen
So the theory from Ghost of Tsushima is that Jin's mother is fox and father is the bird. Or the other way round, so would make sense that Jin would want to assist the next ghost. Def has to be a mythic tale about Jin in Yotei. If his story is cannon then it'll be known about by those in this game.
Other than the Sakai family armor helmet in the SoP? lol.
Of course there's going to be references for fans to discover but nothing obvious.
Smart just a new game.
Jin created the Ghost Stance. I wonder if he’ll be referenced for that when Atsu discovers it, or if they’ll disregard him and treat it like a new thing. This is assuming Atsu’s Ghost Stance will be a 1HKO move again.
Wait, Atsu has more weapons, so if she can do a special ghost stance with any of them, that would be cool. Unless they limit it to just the sword.
As much as I like Ghost of Tsushima, I thought Jin and his plight were the weakest parts. However, that did allow the side stories and the rest of the cast to really shine. Either way, I'm neither here nor there on whether he's referenced or not.
I don't believe it.
That would be incredibly stupid if they didn't at least make some small reference to what Jin and Yuna got up to after the first game. I mean if they don't plan on making a direct sequel to the first game they can just give us a lore dump somewhere (like Jin's decedent's house that you can go into and find a diary).
And Sucker Punch is not stupid. There will be SOMETHING in there.
