We'll update this article once the patch is available to download.
Original Story: A second major update for Oblivion Remastered has been revealed, and it's set to address some of the game's most glaring issues.
Patch 1.2 is out now in beta form on Steam, but it'll (hopefully) be coming to PS5 soon enough.
The headline for this one is the addition of new difficulty settings. Since its release back in April, players have been critical of the remaster's current options, with many stating that they're either too easy or too much of a chore.
It sounds like you'll now be able to adjust 'Player Combat Damage' and 'Enemy Combat Damage' values to suit your needs, while a 'Journeyman' difficulty setting aims to bridge the gap between Adept and Expert.
For some, though, the biggest draw of this update will be the promised improvements to the game's frankly shoddy performance. Multiple optimisations have been made, and recurring frame rate drops in certain locations have apparently been fixed.
You can get the full scoop via the patch notes, which we've collected below.

Finally. I put the game on hold because of the dreadful performance so hopefully this improves things.
Stop with the bloody difficulty setting bandaids and just add a hardcore mode that also removes the game destroying enemy scaling! What is so hard about that?
Don't know if this will be enough of a fix for me, but oh well. They should've just waited half a year and release the game in October or something -.-'
Not buying until they disentangle themselves from MS
very much looking forward to playing this game, when it's properly working / finished
Been waiting for this. 🥳
About time. The game was so choppy I thought I was playing Mindseye.
Currently my goty, let's see the games that come out the second half of the year
Physical edition please then I'll get it
For me, it wasn't just the performance but the gaslighting they and sites like this did suggesting changes to level scaling that turned out to be pretty much nothing.
Level scaling completely ruins the progression systems in any rpg. Its just so lazy. That coupled with the performance being garbage because they just slapped on a coat of paint onto a game with many issues that could have been addressed is just sad. To even call this a remaster is laughable. It's just an engine upgrade that we were gaslit to believe it more and they made millions off of that bait and switch shadow drop.
This immediately went into my pile of shame list as a game I regret supporting with early adoption. So glad I discovered tainted grail fall of Avalon right after this dumpster fire. A far better game in terms of combat, atmosphere, and story than any bgs ai/procedurally generated slop.
Hopefully not too long of a wait
Think I will wait and see what DF make of it, before I add it to my wishlist.
Shame the shoddy launch condition many publishers let games out since patches on consoles are a current thing.
@KundaliniRising333
You are completely right. A very effective marketing campaign with measured leaks creates the perfect opportunity to part a "fool"* with his money. It even outshone one of the most anticipated indies that had grabbed attention in big showcase(s). It wouldn't have done that without game journalists and influencers.
*Everyone knows Bethesda games will simply act up now and again - even devs have diligently resolved a heap of issues. And I am sure it is a great game. It was legendary after all.
The lesson here is twofold. Consumers: Don't expect too much from a Bethesda game. Publishers: Allow devs to spend more time on polish and bugsquashing. Have it in the scheduling from the beginning.
There's a secret lesson also: The universe rewards patient gamers who wait for a game to reach a point in its lifetime where support has run its course and price has gone down.
Sweet! It’s my first time playing Oblivion and I am really enjoying it. 20-30 hours in. The performance is pretty terrible sometimes but I don’t really care, I just chose not to let it bother me. Glad to hear it should be getting a boost though, but tbh I would be surprised if it makes a huge difference.
I have a few magic items, and when I equip them my character carries a weird effect. Such as being on fire. I am sure this is a bug? Would be nice if they could fix that, for sure…
I won't touch this till it seriously improves performance no thanks
Finally! About time.
I think this is the patch I've been waiting for, will probably jump in after!
@EfYI for the most part agree with you but we need to at least push back against this idea that waiting for a patch or a long-term cycle of fixes and support to be the Benchmark when it's okay to purchase the game if they're selling it at full retail. I expect a finished product. Shouldn't we all? Or this idea that it's just normal Bethesda to not actually polish their f****** games, so let's keep making that a stereotype rather than what it is. Selling an untested/faulty product.
I too wait for sales and rarely jump into anything day one especially after doing so with the PS5 itself and it being one hell of a letdown generation. However it's pretty sad that we're in a state where we as consumers just go into releases assuming they're going to be garbage because the industry has made that the norm just to save a buck or two. Even more so what's concerning is it seems like releases are now put out unfinished intentionally to see if it sells enough to be "worth," actually finishing and polishing based on sales numbers and that's just frankly disgusting.
The norm in our predatory economic system is of course to build in things like planned obsolescence and or some form of degradation over time or monetizing usage Parts etc etc but can you imagine if someone released a TV or a dishwasher or a dryer, toaster, or an oven that just didn't work correctly even just 15% of the time. The product would fail, returns would be on Mass. I feel like video games is like the only industry where new Products are released faulty with the hope that it will be finished post sale. now it seems to be this brainwashed notion with the gamer base that this is normal.
Look at a TV is a good example actually because there you see where there's certain things that come up or features that aren't working right or aren't fully implemented and you get a firmware update. gaming is on a far different extreme.
Capcom for example, intentionally releases an unfinished product technically speaking, to appear successful in quarterly financial earnings deadlines, alongside having the most profitable period in their entire history.
Yet they're applauded like some industry darling despite them essentially saying it's fanbase are not worth giving a finished product at release, or ever really with Capcom.
Massive AAA outfits should not be getting a pass on this practice.
@Jtheripper The problem is someone wants their return on investments unfortunately.
So they still aren't fixing the side quest with the disappearing fish in the lake? FFS Bethesda.
@KundaliniRising333 not to mention the pathetic shadow release at the time of Clair Obscur E33
I can't stress enough, that Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon is leagues better a game and far more fun to explore.
If you can stomach some pretty glaring technical issues on console. I highly recommend it. The devs have already put out like half a dozen patches since release and the game has an active discord community.
For an indie effort it's a flawed triumph and it's a shame it got so little press.
This is an excellent remaster that drives people completely insane. Bummed that I Platinumed it already because "Journeyman mode" would have made for the perfect playthrough.
Frankly, I was very angry when I could barely finish Shivering Isles because of a bug in the very end of the very last story quest. There's just too many bugs, even for a Bethesda game.
@KundaliniRising333
2 excellent posts.
SW Jedi Survivor was the game that broke my buying habits - the last straw, so to say.
I literally cannot play games that dont maintain near locked 60fps - I get headaches and/or feel sick.
I used to pre-order the games I wanted, but after the condition SWJS launched in, and the fact it took them 6 months to issue a fix - a simple fix mind you, as they just removed forced RT in Perf mode (something that was available on the PC version) - I now only buy after review, including DF analysis.
My only exception is Sony 1st party who always excel in this area.
The trouble is, this 'launch broken, (maybe) fix later' problem, and I am fully including games with game breaking bugs or excessive minor bugs here too, is only being exacerbated by gamers and the media to a degree.
How many times have we seen a game launch with significant issues, proven by analysis, and heavily discussed, only to see comment sections filled with rubbish like "it ran buttery smooth for me" or "but I didn't see any bugs".
Now, I accept some people cant see framerate issues as well, or may get lucky on the bug front, but that still doesn't excuse the behaviour.
I understand some may want to 'suppport' games they enjoy, but this is completely self defeating, as all it does is encourage devs/publishers to keep doing it, and more often, and to a greater degree - if everyone 'kicked off', devs/publishers would soon get the message.
Reviews can also be problematic - in the last few months I have seen reviews that note a significant issue, but then dont knock the score down accordingly. 1 review even stated something along the lines of "its likely they will patch later".
Reviews should start heavily penalising for this stuff, with the intention of updating once patched - a real 'you do this, and we will do it too' mentality - and if the review site misses the patch, or aggregate sites refuse to update, well thats on the devs/publishers for releasing in that state.
Going by DF the patch done barely anything on PC.
@DennisReynolds yeah I came to say exactly this, there seems to be no noticeable difference on PC
It has already been confirmed to NOT in fact improve performance.
@KundaliniRising333 @carlos82 @DennisReynolds
If thats the case (and the same on console), I think thats a really p*** poor showing by the devs, particularly given the shadow drop launch.
I was hoping to buy (PS5) following this patch, but if the patch does nothing / very little, then I will remove from my wishlist as I doubt they ever will fix it.
I just bought this 3 days ago, having a great time but the performance and hitches is deplorable. I HOPE this patch came improve it somewhat, but judging by DF and the previous comments I will likely be disappointed.
@Rich33 yeah DF literally called the patch a "nothing burger."
It's near the very top of my game buyers remore pile. It's essentially the equivalent of them painting over an aging rust bucket of a of car, advertising improvements mechanically, but in truth doing near none of it yet charging a premium for it.
It's likely not going to be fixed, as the core foundational issues of bgs engine are now further burdened by essentially laying on ue5 on top of it.
@Rich33 Just put half hour into it and nothing has changed except the stuttering feels worse.
Still no good reason not to play the game on the easiest difficulty though. Which is boring as hell and defeats the purpose of levelling. No point playing at higher difficulties because there's no good reason, not even a trophy. It's a catch 22.
@KundaliniRising333 They should have just done a PS4 Skyrim level remaster of it within the Creation Engine instead of forcing U5 on it. Just up the textures, improve the lighting, make it 60fps and we could off had a decent remaster.
@DennisReynolds agreed
Performance aside even, I really wish they had truly moved alway from the level scaling system of that time. It just ruins the progression feel of an rpg. Back in the day I think I was just so enamored with a big first person open world RPG to explore and it was somewhat fresh and idea aside from Morrowind or even kingsfield. However, playing it now, older and wiser, it's just a garbage system that really just makes all the repetitiveness that is in Oblivion a chore to do more than fun because the power fantasy of an rpg diminished.
It's interesting to look at bgs titles through a more modern-day lens. you start to realize how much they have relied on procedural generation and other shortcuts throughout the years. Reluctance to modernize or evolve any of these features is really starting to show their incompetence as a developer but also just their reluctance to grow in favor of very basic iteration. It's insane how long these games take to make considering those shortcuts. It really suggests poor management.
In the case of this release it's also kind of a double hit the fact that virtuos is working on it because they're also known for not really being able to improve what they remaster or Port once it's released so I wouldn't hold my breath on this getting any better than what it is right now especially when you couple that with bgs's patch record in terms of performance.
It's certainly kind of concerning to look at what they did with this release and know that they have Fallout remasterakes in the pipeline, as it's 100% going to be the same case and they don't really have much of an incentive to not do that because this really sold so well And sadly i was part of that.
picked this up in the sale and will play it once I finish THPS3+4 / the patch drops...
bracing myself for poor performance and bugs, but hopefully I can still enjoy the game!
If this is the same patch digital foundry were discussing a days ago, then unfortunately the performance is still rubbish with little to no change. We'll be waiting another 12 months before anything is done properly.
@DennisReynolds @KundaliniRising333
Thank you for the info (no sarcasm).
Its a shame, because I played Oblivion way back when it was released - it was the game that made me buy a 360 to play, and I could have forgiven a few quirks with an unhealthy dose of nostalgia. But, I can't play it with the technical issues I saw back when it launched (DF review).
@DennisReynolds Where did you see that on DF. I can't find it anywhere and I want to read it. Thanks
I only tried it for 5 minutes but I had zero hitching while traveling outside of towns which is a marked improvement over before when it would do so every 20-30 seconds. Obviously need to try it longer but a positive immediate first impression. Glad to hear about the difficulty options too as it’s getting kinda silly!
Hopefully this is helpful!
@cburg Its on there Podcast from last week.
@DennisReynolds ok thanks
I just want a real performance patch for Tainted Grail. Reinstalling Oblivion just to see if the patch fixes anything means I need to find 124 gigs and wait hours, which isn't really feasible when the PS5 is basically our entertainment center.
@LikelySatan
I wanted so bad to buy if for PS5, and waited patiently for the patches, but it sounds like it's going to be a long wait.
Bought it on Steamdeck, not a single crash, a few stutters here and there and it definitely doesn't keep 30 sadly.
Very fun though, if you've got a deck or PC handheld
@DennisReynolds If we're lucky PS6 back-compat might fix the performance haha. Slapping UE5 on top of the Creation Engine worked about as well as you would've expected it to. Could've been a song if they did as you suggested and went with a more modest Skyrim Special Edition style upgrade.
Next we'll probably have the 'pleasure' of seeing Fallout 3/New Vegas get the same treatment.
Does it restore the original graphics and voice acting? Cause if not I'm not reinstalling it 😅
It never fails to amaze me how titles like this from major studios are released in such a broken condition. I've lost count of how many recent-ish releases are barely playable or in some cases even damage a PlayStation. Has Hideo even acknowledged the Death Stranding 2 over heating issue yet? All that appears to happen is a patch is released which breaks the game even further. I'm half tempted to return the game for a refund.
@KundaliniRising333 To be fair to Capcom they are nowhere near as bad as Bethesda. The RE series for example I cannot recall any day one problems whereas with Bethesda it's pretty much a given with the studio. And hence why I never have and never will buy one of their games day one. It's just a pity the gaming industry doesn't have some kind of quality code that forces studios to do better and not treat their fans like idiots.
@Andy22385 And for £15 less than the store price.....
https://www.thegamecollection.net/the-elder-scrolls-iv-oblivion-remastered-deluxe-edition-ps5-38690?sqr=oblivion
@sanderson72 and likely able to sell it for £25 when done too 😅
